Thanks for your help
The photo is about 100 years old and shows two stones of families related by marriage.
The inscription of the one on the left is as follows:
"Sacred to the memory of Margaret Jane Hughes who died January 26th
1835 aged 5 years and 6 months. Also Mr. William Hughes who drowned at sea
Jan 14 1840 aged 18 years and 11 months. Also Mr. John Hughes, Second Master
of H.M.S. Pantaloon and brother of the above who died on the coast of Africa
August 29th 1843 aged 26 years. Also Mr. Morris Hughes, father of the above
who departed this life July 4th 1851 aged 70 years.
I'm anchor'd safe, My weary soul
Obtains a port of rest
Where storms ne'er beat, nor billows roll
Across my peaceful breast."
The right hand stone reads;
"Sacred to the memory of Mr. Henry Heron Smith, Second Master of
H.M. Ship Traffalgar who departed this life 8th September 1846 aged 26
years."
These stones, photographed so long ago are believed to be in
Portsmouth, however their exact location is not known to us nor whether they
have survived to this day.
